I watched the first part of the UStream recording (second half — the actual debate lost sound :-<) and I agree with you that it's not dead yet. I think we have to be careful that we don't overestimate the skills and knowledge of our students (and our colleagues). The institutional VLE is a comforting place to set up portals to interesting learning materials. It would be nicer if they where more open than they are, I suppose, but with imagination it is possible to introduce the more interesting Web2.0, social-networky, stuff into them. I find that all I typically need is a URL or a bit of embedded HTML to break out of the walled garden!
