Today I ran a copyright workshop at the RSC SW VLE Forum in Taunton.

RSC South West VLE Forum

I am currently at the RSC SW VLE Forum.

This is a really nice event, in which VLE developers and managers from across the South West get together, not just for chatting but to listen to presentations and now and again workshop activities.

Even though Gloucestershire College is advanced in terms of embedding their VLE into teaching and learning, it is always useful to go because I have found out things that I didn’t know, always learning something new.

Attending a digital images workshop

I am currently attending a workshop on digital images at the JISC Digitisation Conference.

It is a technical briefing on capture, conversion and workflow.

Nigel Goldsmith, the TASI Technical Research Officer is talking about images, RAW format, Adobe’s Digital Negative format and JPEG2000.

Outlining many of the problems with JPEG2000 and why it isn’t widely used or supported.

It’s quite interesting.

A connected conference

What is nice about this JISC Conference is the connectivity. There is free wireless access, this means that you can access the websites mentioned in presentations, the conference blog (to read entries on presentations and workshops you missed), e-mail (so less of a pain when you get back to the office), you can blog and micro blog. You can upload photographs to Flickr and view others’ del.icio.us links from the conference.

Of course laptop batteries never last, but at this conference there are power points to plug your laptop in.

There is a conference blog and a conference wiki.

Makes a conference easier to digest and reflect upon.

JISC Digitisation Conference on e-Content

Tomorrow (Thursday) I am off to Cardiff to attend the JISC Digitisation Conference on e-Content.

Today saw a major international symposium organised and hosted by JISC to explore national and international policies and strategies around e-content.

I am attending the next two days.

Delegates will be joined on Thursday by around 130 leading figures from education, research, cultural heritage, public broadcasting and industry in the UK and beyond for a further two days for a conference on digitisation which will showcase national and international digitisation initiatives – including JISC’s £22m digitisation programme – and explore the potential for cross-sectoral cooperation in this area.

Should be an interesting conference. I am hoping to blog a few entries over the conference (there is wireless access), however there is also the official blog: JISC Digitisation Blog.

m-learning, mobile

Molenet

I am attending the information day on Molenet.

The Mobile Learning Network (MoLeNET) is a unique collaborative approach to encouraging, supporting, expanding and promoting mobile learning, primarily in the English Further Education sector, via supported shared cost mobile learning projects.

Collaboration at UK national level involves colleges and the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) sharing the cost of projects introducing or expanding mobile learning and the Learning and Skills Network (LSN) providing a support programme.

There is some interesting ideas here, and the £6m for capital expenditure will provide a definite boost to mobile-learning in the FE sector.

Currently listening to Lilian Soon giving a very interesting and informative presentation on m-learning.

e-Learning Gathering Momentum

I am attending an RSC SW Event at City of Bristol College, e-Learning Gathering Momentum.  Interesting for me as I am back at City of Bristol college where I was a Business lecturer for many years. Meeting old colleagues has been nice.

At the moment Angela Harvey from the RSC SW is introducing the door, but is also mentioning the CAMEL approach.

Should be an interesting and informative day.

JISC Pedagogy Experts Meeting

I am in Bristol for the JISC Pedagogy Experts Meeting.

The aim of the meeting is to inform the group of the current issues and investigations into many of the JISC e-learning Learners’ Experience projects, also to consult the experts own expertise in relation to learners’ experiences.

The meeting will also explore implications of these issues for teaching practice, organisational strategies and for technical development.

The group will also be consulted on the direction and priorities for learner centered development in the future.

This is very much a meeting and a discussion and not a series of presentations with a few questions.

Personally I will be on a panel this afternoon looking at how can we help to meet learners’ changing needs and expectations?

I will be adding more stuff over the day (fingers crossed).
